'To all those 'others' who create from their actual, lived experience are surrealist, through the multi-disciplinary nature of art' - TODEM

Hosted by TODEM- 'An Afro-Surrealist View' introduced us to new and upcoming artists whose works transcend the sometimes placed restrictions in creation.

The exhibition featured artists Kandre Arámidẹ Hassan, Drew Iheoma, Dẹ̀mú Studios, Kimani Worghs, Wxvei (Daniel) and Babypulp all showcasing individual concepts building onto the theme.

A key feature of the exhibition was the aspect of interactive art- certain pieces were complemented by a scent chosen by the artist which was thought to parallel the feel/mood of the work, a brilliant way to promote audience involvement, allowing for a greater communal sense when walking around as conversation would spark.

The curator, Tofe, made room for an environment where black art was nurtured and celebrated, exploring the minds and inspirations of the artists who create. A stunning evening filled with art and joy.

For as long as civilization has existed symbols and drawings have been used to share the authentic and vital messages of the world. Take centuries old West African art such as the Benin heads- or the example of the symbolism used and still seen to decorate...
